Alvaro Antonio Pereira Coli is a fourth-generation coffee farmer on the land his family has owned since migrating from Italy. He produces award winning coffees on his farm located on the Minas Gerais side of the Serra da Mantiqueira mountain range. He participates in a local cooperative and producers' Union.
This peaberry lot is collected from small farms in the Kayanza Province around the village of Bukeye. Here the Long Miles project established a washing station to empower local growers to improve the quality of their exports and enable them to connect with roasters around the globe who could pay them a fair price for their crops.
Flanked by the Nkokoma River, the Ninga community is located near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Long Miles Project set up a washing station here after finding that farmers from this region were traveling a long way to reach a mill with accurate scales and that paid a fair price.
Located in a biological conservation corridor, the Valle del Cauca region lies between the National Park of Tatama and the Serrania de los Paraguas mountains. Coffee and sugar cane are popular crops here, and the farmers have a keen focus on water management and the environment to ensure that natural resources are preserved.
The Ramirez Estate employs over 400 workers, many Haitian migrants and women, paying them wages well above Fair Trade rates. The estate spends a portion of their profits on sustainability measures, such as gas recycling and water filtrations systems, in addition to donating books and computers to local schools.
Robel Kidane draws coffee lots from farms above 2500 meters above sea level, High elevation equals leads to slow maturation and more sweetness. Natural processing requires labor intensive sorting and drying procedures. The ripe, red cherries are selected, hand-sorted, then placed on raised beds for to dry.
